Teaching Samples
Introductory lesson for Poetry: As a class we created a "Poet-Tree" detailing aspects of poetry, such as the various types, why poetry is written, and what purpose poems can serve. In small groups the students then used figurative language to create "color poems" using paint color-variation cards, displayed as flowers alongside the tree. The use of this lesson demonstrates subject matter expertise and planning/organizational skills of the teacher.
Word Wall Bulletin Board: The "popcorn" theme of this bulletin board inspired the title, "Our Word Wall is Popping!" The board displays various words and their corresponding definitions for future reference of students. A word wall can be altered for any grade level and can be used in subjects other than Language Arts/Literacy. This can demonstrate a teacher's planning and practices, subject matter expertise, and a strong, positive effect on student growth.
Expert Interview, Grade 5: students were able to interview an "expert" in the field of architecture during our geometry unit to learn about a real-world application of the subject. This was a facet of inquiry-based learning, demonstrating a strong, positive effect on student growth and understanding.
